Archaeologists are always late to the party. A person has died,
the feast has happened, the remains have been burnt and buried, but
the fascination lies in what we can tease out from these remnants.
In this illustrated talk Sophia Adams will take a close look at
what has been left behind from the funerals of pre-Roman Britain.
What happened to the dead around London and beyond before London
existed? How is information gleaned from the pieces that survive?
What might a funeral have looked like over 2000 years ago? This is
a story of cremations, food, wine and buckets. From wagons to
flagons, and people in pits, to bones in bottles.

SOPHIA ADAMS
Sophia Adams is a Curator
in the Department of Britain, Europe and Prehistory at The British
Museum. Her research has focussed on pre-Roman and Roman conquest
Britain and northwest Europe, from the social context of
metalworking to how to make a bark shield. She is responsible for a
collection that includes many funerary remains, some of which may
be seen on display in Room 50 at The British Museum.
