Why do we bury our dead—and what does it say about us?

Join cultural historian and author Roger Luckhurst for a fascinating talk exploring how humans across time and cultures have confronted the universal dilemma of what to do with the dead. From the grandeur of the Pyramids of Giza to the solemn cenotaphs of fallen soldiers, from catacombs to columbaria, Luckhurst weaves together art, history, literature, and popular culture to reveal the shifting landscapes of remembrance.

Roger will be launching his latest book 'Graveyards - A History of Living with the Dead' and his talk will move from ancient burial rites and religious traditions to Victorian grave-robbing, overcrowded urban cemeteries, and the rise of garden cemeteries. In an age of cremation, cryogenics, and digital memorials, are graveyards becoming relics themselves? With trademark wit and depth, Luckhurst invites us to consider the cultural, emotional, and architectural legacies of the dead—and what they leave behind for the living.

Tickets £12 including a delightful gin cocktail and a 20% donation toward a host of restoration works at Highgate Cemetery.

As a London Month of the Dead regular, I was chuffed to have an event around Christmas. The performance was fantastic and the atmosphere was perfect!

We were a little disappointed that we were unable to hear Casting the Runes. The other stories were fun though, especially the Judge’s House. How could it go wrong with Bram Stocker in charge!
