"The East End has always been close. If you were born in the East End, you stayed and you died in the East End”

A unique opportunity to visit T Cribb & Sons - one of the oldest independent funeral directors in London. A family business established in the East End in 1881, they have for over 140 years cared for the city’s dead and bereaved. They are the only funeral directors in the the UK that have their own stable, horses, coachmen, grooms and vehicles – they even grow their own hay.

Director John Harris, whose daughters and nephews work with him is the great grandson of Thomas Cribb, the founder of the business, and is an expert in funerary history. He will show us his extraordinary collection of death-related ephemera, which includes unique memento mori, historical documents, funeral stationery, jewellery, coffin-shaped snuff boxes and the mummified arm of an executed East End murderer.

Tickets include a 20% donation to a host of restoration projects at Kensal Green Cemetery. Please click here to purchase.

JOHN HARRIS

John Harris has worked with the family firm since the 1970s and is a founder member and past president of The Society of Allied and Independent Funeral Directors. He graduated with a Masters Degree in ‘Death in Society’ from Reading University in October 2000 and regularly gives lectures throughout the country on funeral history.

As a London Month of the Dead regular, I was chuffed to have an event around Christmas. The performance was fantastic and the atmosphere was perfect!

We were a little disappointed that we were unable to hear Casting the Runes. The other stories were fun though, especially the Judge’s House. How could it go wrong with Bram Stocker in charge!
