Marcella Puppini and Katharine Blake formidably join forces to create a macabre supergroup where tales of obsessive love are riddled with murder, betrayal and necromancy. Taking inspiration from real-life crimes such as the infamous Red Barn Murder, the duo delve into the genre of dark country through traditional ballads and original songs. Expect haunting harmonies, gothic drama, and spellbinding storytelling as these queens of vocal weave their story telling magic.

This candlelit concert unfolds within the gothic grandeur of Brompton Cemetery Chapel, a most fitting setting for tales where love and death drift side by side through the flickering veil of the uncanny.

Katharine Blake musical director and composer of Mediaeval Baebes and lead singer and songwriter of Miranda Sex Garden, has previously delved into this world as a guest vocalist on Nick Cave’s ‘Murder Ballads’ album as the voice of the ‘Lovely Creature’. Her work with Mediaeval Baebes has spanned nearly 3 decades where she has enjoyed a no.1 and no.2 classical album, an Ivor Novella award and a double Emmy nomination. Her first band, the recently revived Miranda Sex Garden have achieved cult status as a uniquely avant-garde goth rock band.

Marcella Puppiniis the founder and creative director of the platinum-selling vocal harmony group The Puppini Sisters and a resident DJ at Torture Garden, with an illustrious career as a designer with Vivienne Westwood in the late ‘90s, as founder and composer of Weimar-Punk Orchestra Marcella and The Forget Me Nots, and as the only female guest conductor of the prestigious Russian jazz band The George Garanian Big Band.

A Curious Invitation and Antique Beat
This year Antique Beat and A Curious Invitation will be hosting The London Month of the Dead, a series of 36 different events investigating the capital’s relationship with its deceased residents. Events will include a private view of the Museum of London’s bone archive, taxidermy workshops, macabre walking tours and private views and a programme of weekend death salons with talks on subjects ranging from public dissection and body snatching to reincarnation and funereal folklore. Each salon will feature a pair of speakers, authorities in fields such as osteology, forensic pathology and the paranormal, who will offer their own perspectives and insights on mortality in the city. Each year the London Month of the Dead donates 20% of all ticket revenue to one of London's magnificent seven cemeteries. In 2017 all of the death salons and concerts will be hosted at the Dissenters and Anglican chapels at Kensal Green. In previous years the month's programme has centered around Brompton Cemetery but the chapel is now undergoing important restoration work, a project the London Month of the Dead is proud to have supported. The London Month of the Dead has been curated by a Curious Invitation and Antique Beat to inform, entertain and provoke on the subject of death and London cemeteries.

As a London Month of the Dead regular, I was chuffed to have an event around Christmas. The performance was fantastic and the atmosphere was perfect!

We were a little disappointed that we were unable to hear Casting the Runes. The other stories were fun though, especially the Judge’s House. How could it go wrong with Bram Stocker in charge!
